The End of Summer, the Start of a Bright Year

In a flurry of excitement and celebration, City Year Orlando held their annual Opening Day at Valencia College on September 16. This ceremony marks City Year’s fifth year serving in Orlando through our 68 AmeriCorps members who have publicly pledged to serve full-time alongside teachers in order to support student success in seven Orange County Public Schools. City Year believes that every student can succeed and helps students by providing school-wide activities including tutoring, mentoring, in-classroom and social-emotional support, and afterschool programs.

In support of this ongoing improvement, City Year was thrilled to have Chester Spellman join our AmeriCorps members in their jumpstart towards helping Orlando students and schools succeed. Spellman is the CEO of Volunteer Florida who continually dedicates his efforts in supporting Orlando’s youth in school and in the community.

At the event, Diane O'Dell, Vice President of Community Relations with Universal Orlando, was awarded the Champion of Service Award from Volunteer Florida's CEO Chester Spellman.
