City Year’s relationship to Senator Jeanne Shaheen reaches back in history years before the organization landed in her home state to when she was actually the boss of City Year’s co-founder, Alan Khazei. Back when the Senator was Governor Shaheen, she openly and enthusiastically welcomed City Year to New Hampshire and over the years since she has continued to utilize her strong voice in Washington DC to advocate for AmeriCorps and City Year. Here in the Granite State she has always been a champion and friend to the organization, always showing up as our advocate, sharing our work and our story with others and allowing us the opportunity to expand our message and our support base and then to grow. Senator Shaheen and her husband Bill Shaheen received our Lifetime of Service Award in 2010. One of the Senators’ nephews served as a City Year NH corps member.
The first woman in history to be elected a Governor and a United States Senator, Jeanne Shaheen has been involved in all levels of New Hampshire life. She taught in a New Hampshire high school, chaired the Town of Madbury’s zoning board and served three terms in the State Senate.
