More than 300 hundred volunteers spent Monday at Carson Academy adding murals and messages of hope to the building.

REPORTER: THE GYMNASIUM AT CARSON ACADEMY ON THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF MILWAUKEE, BUZZING WITH EXCITEMENT. HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS, WORKING ON THEIR DAY OFF IN HONOR OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. >> NEW YEAR, NEW EXCITING PROJECTS. REPORTER: USING THE WORDS OF DR. KING TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE. >> DR. KING SAID THAT DARKNESS CAN NEVER RISE, IT TAKES LIGHT TO SHINE THROUGH, SO TODAY WE ARE BRINGING LIGHT INTO THE SCHOOL BY PAINTING MURALS, INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGES FOR OUR YOUNG SCHOLARS. REPORTER: VOLUNTEERS WITH THE GROUP CITY YEAR MILWAUKEE WORK WITH MPS STUDENTS EVERY DAY TO GIVE THEM THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED. >> THINK BIG, NO EXCUSES, FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. REPORTER: ON MONDAY, THE COMMUNITY JOINED IN THE EFFORTS. >> WE ARE REALLY OUT, WORKING ALONGSIDE OUR COMMUNITY, BEAUTIFYING SCHOOL SPACES AND DOING THINGS TO MAKE MILWAUKEE BEAUTIFUL AND VIBRANT. REPORTER: PAINTING WORDS AND IMAGES OF LOVE, TRUST, PEACE, AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. >> OUR HOPE IS THAT THEY WILL BE THRILLED TO COME TOMORROW AND SEE VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES ON THE WALLS, IT’S GOING TO TAKE ALL OF US TO GET TO DR. More than 300 hundred volunteers spent Monday at Carson Academy adding murals and messages of hope to the building.

The 13th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service kicked off Monday morning with hundreds of volunteers ready to amplify Carson Academy."Dr. King said that darkness can never rise, it takes light to shine through, so today we are bringing light into this school by painting murals, positive quotes, inspirational messages for our young scholars in Carson Academy," says Stephanie Maney-Hartlaub, senior V.P/Exec. Dir., City Year Milwaukee. Volunteers with City Year Milwaukee partnered with Milwaukee Public Schools to add amplifying messages to the walls of the school to help encourage students upon their return.City Year Milwaukee volunteers work with MPS students every day to give them the tools they need to succeed, but on Monday, community members joined in on the effort. These volunteers spent the day painting words and murals of love, trust, peace and justice for all. Every year City Year Milwaukee chooses a different school across MPS to volunteer at on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
