City Year, an education nonprofit that helps students and schools succeed, has partnered with Talkspace, the global leader in online therapy, to support 137 City Year AmeriCorps members and staff who serve in high-need communities across Milwaukee.

City Year Milwaukee’s trained near-peer AmeriCorps members serve in schools full-time as tutors and mentors, providing individual student, classroom and whole school support to ensure students stay in school and on track to high school graduation. The partnership with Talkspace will offer City Year AmeriCorps members and staff working in schools the convenience of connecting to Talkspace’s licensed counselors from their computers or mobile device.

“The students we serve in Milwaukee are so incredibly bright and talented and deserve the best City Year has to offer them. Access to mental health supports are critical for young people to be at their best to serve our students,” said Meralis T. Hood, Executive Director of City Year Milwaukee. “Talkspace provides the flexibility for our AmeriCorps members to have the support they need to serve.”

Talkspace matches City Year staff and AmeriCorps members with licensed therapists based on individual needs. By providing individuals with access to therapists over the phone, video chat and text, City Year staff and AmeriCorps members will receive mental health resources and support they need, allowing them to be more effective in their day-to-day work supporting students and schools.

“Traditional mental health support does not always fit the busy schedules of those who spend the majority of their day in service to others,” said Talkspaces’ Chief Commercial Officer, Lynn Hamilton. “Talkspace believes in City Year’s work to serve Milwaukee’s students, and we are excited to provide them with the counseling resources they need in a way that is convenient to their schedules.”

“I know that the students I serve have the resilience to succeed in school and I want to be at my best to support my students and team in all they do,” said Joshua Moore, a returning AmeriCorps member who has committed a year of service to tutor and mentor Milwaukee’s students. “This new partnership with Talkspace helps me get the resources I need so I can be there for my students.”

During the school year, 100 City Year Milwaukee AmeriCorps members have committed to serve full-time at 13 Milwaukee schools to provide research-based student, classroom and school-wide supports to help students stay in school and on track to graduate from high school, ready for college and career. City Year’s partnership with Talkspace will support staff and AmeriCorps members in Chicago, Milwaukee and Kansas City in the 2018-2019 school year.
