City Year Fast Facts
Founded in Boston in 1988, City Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization that partners with public schools and teachers to help keep students in school and on track to succeed. In 27 communities across the United States and through three international affiliates, this innovative public-private partnership brings together teams of young AmeriCorps members who commit to a year of full-time service in schools. Corps members provide individual support to students who need extra care and attention, focusing on attendance, behavior, and course performance through in-class tutoring, mentoring, and after school programs.
This year, City Year’s 3,000 young leaders, who are 18 to 24 years old, will serve in 292 schools.
- Tutoring, mentoring and serving as role models to help children and schools succeed
- Leading before and after school programs to extend learning time and reinforce in-class instruction
- Engaging students of all ages in community service and leadership development activities
- Planning and leading transformational service projects
The City Year Pledge
The City Year pledge is a concise and powerful statement expressing the commitment City Year AmeriCorps members make when they assume the responsibilities and privileges of wearing the red or yellow jacket.
I pledge to serve as a City Year member to the very best of my ability,
To honor the rules and expectations of City Year,
To respect my colleagues and the people and communities we serve,
To provide excellent service,
To lead by example and be a role model to children,
To celebrate the diversity of people, ideas, and cultures around me,
To serve with an open heart and an open mind,
To be quick to help and slow to judge,
To do my best to make a difference in the lives of others and
To build a stronger community, nation and world for all of us.
