By Shaneequa Shyrier, Farmers Team at Santee Education Complex

On the behalf of my team at Santee, I am incredibly honored to be sponsored by Farmers Insurance! We are the first City Year team at Santee Education Complex, and it is humbling to see our work recognized and appreciated not only by school administrators, but also by a company that values education. We are aware of the quality time and service that Farmers invests in its customers, and we are excited to have them invest in our efforts to make a difference on Santee’s campus.

Here at Santee, we are a team of 16, working in 9th and 10th grade classrooms to provide students one-on-one or small group tutoring. We also have an after-school program and provide 45 students on a daily basis homework help and tutoring, as well as enrichment programs.

Santee Education Complex Team at Opening Day

Our team is especially passionate about fostering a college-ready environment to encourage students to pursue higher education upon high school graduation. We collaborate with Santee administration and the student body to host school-wide initiatives like test preparation sessions, resume reviews, mock interviews, and college nights. One of our most successful events was our Senior College Night, where we had a college panel composed of recent Santee graduates, who are now attending four-year universities, and our team, all of whom have graduated from college.  The event included a multimedia presentation by the College Adviser, who shared brochures and pamphlets with information pertaining to the admissions process. We had over fifty parents and Santee seniors in attendance, as well as received positive feedback from families and administration after the event had concluded.

Being sponsored by Farmers Insurance will allow my team to continue to our work at Santee, inspiring and invigorating our students!

Farmers Insurance joins City Year Los Angeles as the newest Team Sponsor, supporting our corps members at Santee Education Complex.  This partnership aligns directly with Farmers’ goal of providing better opportunities for at-risk youth by increasing their chances to graduate high school ready for college and successful careers.  Santee is a new City Year school partner, and Farmers’ investment will support the work that the corps members have started this year, as well as help in City Year’s work in high schools across the city.
