By Siria Castaneda, Corps Member, Disney Team at Normandie Ave. Elementary School
On October 26, 2013, Normandie Ave Elementary School hosted its 3rd annual Health and Harvest2Harvest Festival, an event where students and members of the South LA community come together to celebrate Halloween in a safe environment and engage in activities that encourage and promote healthy living. The Disney Team collaborated with Normandie staff members to help plan and set up the event. Over 300 Normandie students and community members came out to enjoy the various activities the festival had to offer, including a face painting booth, pony rides, a video game truck (where everyone had a chance to play Just Dance), and a potato sack race, that was coordinated by one of my teammates, Gurneet Pannu.
The Halloween costume contest was one of the many highlights of my day. One of my students dressed up as a bathtub and won for most original. Another student was dressed up as Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and looked completely adorable! Two of my teammates and I participated in the haunted house that took place inside the school’s library. We got to wear frightening masks to scare anyone who went in. The students and families really enjoyed it.
We appreciate Disney, our team sponsor, for supporting the event. Thanks to Disney we were able to provide attendees fun giveaways, including pens, key rings, pedometers, mini-radios, sling bags, and more. We also got to distribute Disney Magic of Healthy Living content, and useful tools to encourage kids and parents to lead healthier lifestyles.
The event was a huge success and it was great to see our community come together!
