Living in Kansas City

A large city with a small-town feel, Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri and is situated along the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. An up-and-coming city, it’s an exciting time to live and work in Kansas City with many new companies emerging and the brand new KC Streetcar, a free street car that travels throughout the heart of downtown Kansas City. Kansas City is home to a unique style of barbecue most notable for its slow-cooked, smokey flavors. Free admission to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, exciting professional sporting events and dozens of barbecue restaurants to try are just a few examples of all that Kansas City has to offer.

Why We Need You

Students in Kansas City face significant challenges that effect their lives both inside and outside the classroom every day. City Year Kansas City currently partners with 5 schools throughout Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS). KCPS is comprised of over 15,000 students, and 100% of students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch.[i] District wide, there are over 50 languages spoken by students, and 1 out of every 5 students’ first language is not English. Additionally, with a growing refugee population in Kansas City, it is difficult to assess where some students are in their level of learning. Districtwide, the graduation rate is 65%.[ii] Across the district, nearly 50% of students entering 9th grade are considered off track. There are many challenges within the district including teacher shortages, turn over, and limited resources exascberted by decreasing enrollment. The Kansas City Public School District is currently under a plan to move from provisionally accredited to full accreditation. City Year is an important part of their plan to implement innovative edcuation reforms and to build a pipeline of high quality teachers for the future of KCPS.
