City Year Detroit’s Own Joins Detroit Equity Action Lab Racial Equity Fellowship

Steven Bowman, Sr. Learning and Development Director at City Year Detroit has joined the 8th cohort of the Detroit Equity Action Lab, Racial Equity Fellowship with the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University. Below, Steven shares what this opportunity means to him:

“Joining the Detroit Equity Action Lab (DEAL) as a racial justice fellowship with Wayne State University represents a unique and profoundly impactful opportunity for me, especially in my role as Sr. Learning and Development Director at City Year Detroit. This fellowship stands at the intersection of education, racial equity, and community empowerment, areas that are deeply intertwined with the mission and values of City Year Detroit. Being part of DEAL enables me to bring back rich insights and innovative practices to our organization, helping to further our commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments and supporting equitable outcomes for all students. It’s a chance to collaborate with a diverse group of leaders and thinkers, all dedicated to dismantling systemic barriers and creating lasting change in Detroit and beyond.

Moreover, the fellowship aligns perfectly with my personal passion for social justice and educational equity. Detroit, with its rich history and vibrant communities, provides a unique context for this work, and Wayne State University’s dedication to public service and community engagement inspires me. Through DEAL, I look forward to deepening my understanding of racial justice issues, enhancing my skills in advocacy and policy development, and forming meaningful partnerships that can amplify our efforts to build a more equitable Detroit. This experience is not just about personal or professional growth; it’s about contributing to a movement that is bigger than myself, one that seeks to transform the social fabric of our communities for generations to come. ”

We are inspired by Steven’s passion and commitment to advancing educational equity and social justice through his work at City Year and beyond. His involvement in this fellowship will undoubtedly further amplify his impact and contribute to positive change in our community. We look forward to seeing the transformative work that will result. Congratulations, Steven, on this incredible achievement!
