Reflecting on CYDC’s MLK Day of Service FY24

On Monday, January 15th, CYDC hosted MLK Day of Service bringing together volunteers, community members, and youths from across DC to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through various projects and activities, we transformed the school environment for the students of Ketcham Elementary School

Projects Completed:

  • Outdoor Classroom Benches: Three sturdy backless benches were constructed and stained, providing a comfortable space for outdoor learning.
  • Classroom Organization Carts: Two classroom carts were constructed to enhance classroom organization and efficiency.
  • Librarian’s Storage Box: A classroom storage box was constructed and painted to assist the librarian in keeping resources organized.
  • School Murals: Vibrant murals were painted in six different locations around the school, adding color and inspiration to our environment.
  • Artistic Creations: Volunteers painted over 20 canvas pieces to place in classrooms and designed & filled 100+ pencil pouches for student use.
  • Educational Resources: Multipurpose boards were adorned with creative designs for use in whole group or small group activities.
  • School Supplies: One hundred pencil pouches were filled with essential school supplies, ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed.
  • CY Room Organization: Volunteers organized and cleaned out the CY Room, creating a welcoming space for community gatherings.
