Meet Michelle Tafel
Vice President and Executive Director for City Year Washington, D.C.
Michelle Tafel serves as the Executive Director of City Year Washington, D.C. In this role, Michelle leads the site of about 30 staff and 150 AmeriCorps members to achieve its mission and support DC students on social emotional development, academic achievement, and attendance.
Prior to joining City Year in December 2017, Michelle was a member of College Summit’s executive leadership team where she served as chief strategy and advancement officer and chief innovation officer. In those roles, she was responsible for raising significant private funding to support the organization, leading the strategic planning and transition from a legacy program and organizational model to a new program, running product pilots, and overseeing alumni initiatives.
Prior to this, Michelle served as chief of staff at College Summit where she worked with the president, CEO, executive team, and board of directors to drive the achievement of College Summit’s mission. Prior to her time as chief of staff, Michelle served in various roles at College Summit beginning her time there as an AmeriCorps VISTA.
While earning her bachelor’s degree, Michelle worked for a Washington, D.C.-based youth leadership organization as a mentor, tutor, teacher, and founder of their young women’s program. Michelle currently serves on the board of Federal City Council and is a 2021 Equity Lab Seeding Disruption Fellow. She is a proud graduate of American University (Bachelor of Arts) and Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management (Master of Business Administration).
