“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

While our students were hopefully staying warm inside on their day off, City Year Columbus AmeriCorps members were working hard on Martin Luther King Day to prepare winter comfort kits to help keep them warm outside.

Our 2017 MLK Day of Service was hosted by HandsOn Central Ohio. We worked to put together winter comfort kits and classroom supplies for the students at Trevitt Elementary on the Near East Side of Columbus. Over 100 students will benefit from the winter kits, which contained hats, gloves, and socks, and each classroom received kits of crayons, glue sticks, activity books, folders, pencils, paper, and erasers.

Some corps members also took the time to create handmade inspirational cards to be given out with the winter kits. The winter items were donated by Nationwide Insurance and the classroom supplies were purchased by HandsOn Central Ohio. Huge thanks to them for their gracious donations!

We were also able to utilize our time at HandsOn by learning of their 211 services such as their 24/7 call center, website, and mobile application for connections to food panties, shelters, and other family resources for crises.
