Our Approach

Tapping into Columbia's Potential

At City Year, we believe education has the power to help every child reach his or her potential. However, in high-poverty communities there are external factors and obstacles students are faced with every day that can interfere with their ability to get to school ready to learn.

Our Impact

powerful results

In 1992, Marie-Louise Ramsdale, Harvard Law student, attended a City Year event. Inspired, she wrote a two-page proposal to bring City Year to South Carolina. The next year, her dream was realized. Since then, we’ve mentored more than 40,000 students in Columbia, and along the way, we measured our success.

Our Corps

Highly Skilled Near-Peer mentors

In Columbia, many children grow up in the midst of poverty, causing them to fall behind in school. But 24 highly skilled City Year AmeriCorps members are working to turn this around.
