This summer, City Year Columbia has collaborated on two community-based programs with the support of our partners: we partnered with SC Afterschool Alliance, EdVenture, and Allendale in implementing an alternative energy STEM curriculum and solar car race, and also with Midlands Community Development Corporation and the Children's Trust of South Carolina in our most recent cycle of the Strengthening Families Program.
City Year Columbia partnered with EdVenture with the support of the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance to implement STEM curriculum for high school students in Allendale.
They spent weeks during the summer learning all about alternative energy, including fun projects like creating a solar-powered oven and cooking their own food!
The curriculum culminated in the students building their own solar cars, and racing them in competition at EdVenture.
Prior to the race, the students were able to showcase their cars at an exhibition at EdVenture, and teach the younger campers about how they built their cars and why they work when powered by the sun.
We are so proud of all our STEM students and all they learned and accomplished this summer!
This summer, City Year Columbia also completed our fifth cycle of Strengthening Families Program, in partnership with the Midlands Community Development Corporation with the support of Children’s Trust of South Carolina.
We proudly graduated 9 families in July after 14 sessions learning more about communication, expectations, boundaries, and managing behavior.
Elder Jennifer D. Bishop served as the keynote speaker at our graduation, delivering a powerful reminder to the parents and children alike about their role in building a strong family.
Each family got the opportunity to share their affirmations and what they have gotten out of the sessions and the relationships they have built over the past several weeks.
It is always so powerful to see how much our families have grown, and we are excited to see what great things they do in the future!
Special shout out to our amazing facilitators who have served and supported our families through it all!
