Mound STEM School Black History Month Celebration

Mound STEM school celebrated Black History Month with their “Black History Month Showcase” on Friday, February 24th. The school assembly was a partnership of performances from the school’s music department and the City Year after school program Hip Hop Academy.

National Mentoring Month - Guss Walls Serves Students Daily

City Year plays a unique role in our schools not only offering academic and after-school support, but also the mentorship we are able to provide students in attendance, behavior, and preparation for their future. City Year AmeriCorps Members work with students every week to set student directed goals to encourage students to take initiative over their everyday decision making. In honor of January being National Mentoring month, I wanted to share some of the extraordinary work that one of my team members is doing to go above and beyond the weekly check in and check out with our students.

City Year Cleveland Hip Hop Academy

City Year AmeriCorps members at Mound STEM School in Cleveland’s Slavic Village have been offering the after school program, Hip Hop Academy to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders for the first time this school year. In the afterschool space, City Year AmeriCorps members use the new program to present topics of art, social justice issues, and literacy through the lens of hip hop, to include current artists, new trends, and the history of hip hop.
