City Year Cleveland celebrated its 60 AmeriCorps members’ year of service to the students of Cleveland. Each of our outstanding AmeriCorps members have given over 1,700 hours of service to our communities, helping create lasting positive change in the places that they served. We honored them at Cuyahoga Community College with a ceremony celebrating their hard work and many achievements this year on June 3, 2016.

The graduation ceremony was filled with moving speeches from AmeriCorps members, the Managing Director of Impact, Thea DeRosa Cerra, and our Executive Director, Phillip Robinson. Seven AmeriCorps members were presented awards for Spirit, Discipline, Purpose, Pride (first year, second year and Team Leader) and Executive Leadership.

The entire corps celebrated a successful year of achievements. During the 2015-2016 school year City Year Cleveland AmeriCorps members served 775 students in attendance, behavior and coursework in literacy and math. Of those, 512 focus list students were provided 454,276 hours of Tier II literacy and math support.

For ten months, from before the first bell until the last student has gone home, these young leaders served as tutors, mentors and role models, filling the gap between what their students truly needed and what schools actually have the capacity to provide. They partnered with school administrators, teachers, community groups and parents to help students overcome the obstacles preventing them from reaching their full potential. Their passion, commitment, and tireless dedication made a tremendous impact on thousands of students across the Slavic Village, Glenville, Central and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods – no doubt changing lives and transforming whole schools.

Their service would not have been possible without the support of the many individuals and organizations who generously gave to City Year Cleveland, as well as the support from family and friends of our AmeriCorps Members. We are grateful to all of you for your dedication to our work. To contribute to the great work of City Year Cleveland AmeriCorps members, click here.

City Year Cleveland looks forward to kicking off our 20th year of service here in Cleveland at Opening Day this coming fall. Stay tuned for details!
