This year, City Year Chicago (CYCHI) participated in the Chicago Community Trust’s annual forum, On the Table. The annual discussion, which encourages small groups of people to get together over lunch to discuss the obstacles we face in our daily lives, is “designed to elevate civic conversation, foster new relationships and create a unifying experience across the region.”

As our site participated in these discussions, we wanted to share the experience of giving a platform for thought to the students we work with.

At the Johnson School of Excellence (in the North Lawndale community), AmeriCorps members posed the question ‘what do you think about the most?’ to their students. Working both individually and in small groups, students answered that question on paper, sharing their thoughts on what they think about, what concerns them, what they care about, and the steps they need to take to reach their goals.

We appreciate the Chicago Community Trust for continuing to encourage this On the Table discussion across the city!
