Chicago – (October 31, 2016) – Visible by thousands of Chicago residents along the southbound Kennedy Expressway each day, the Wintrust Mural Building will spotlight education non-profit City Year Chicago Oct. 27 to Nov. 30.

A tradition since 2013, Wintrust selects a local cause or charity to honor on its mural building. Now, with elaborate and symbolic artwork, the giant mural will showcase to drivers the full-time service of City Year Chicago’s tutors and mentors, who dedicate themselves to improving the community and bridging the gap between what students need and what schools were designed to provide.

“Our exceptional team of red-jacketed AmeriCorps members inspires students to reach their full potential,” Executive Director Rebeca Nieves Huffman said. “We are excited to partner with Wintrust Financial to display our uniquely illustrated mural to re-introduce ourselves to Chicago. We want our city to know that City Year red jackets are making a difference to students in high-need schools.”

This fall marks City Year Chicago’s 23rd year working with local students, schools and communities. Dedicated to increasing freshman on-track rates, City Year Chicago deploys 230 AmeriCorps members mentoring 13,000 students across 26 of the city’s highest need schools.  City Year AmeriCorps members serve full-time alongside teachers in 3rd through 9th grade classrooms, tutoring students one-on-one, providing in-class support and organizing school-wide programs to increase academic achievement and student engagement.

“It’s exciting to have our service to students spotlighted on one of the busiest highways in Chicago” City Year Chicago AmeriCorps Member, Yvonne Burse said. “We are off to a really positive start with our students this school year and look forward to seeing their growth over the course of the year. It all starts in the classroom.”
