On Friday, September 11th, 2015, City Year Chicago AmeriCorps Members celebrated our Opening Day and proudly kicked off their year of service! It was an energetic day, as corps members, their families, and our partners and supports celebrated the 21st year of City Year doing work here in Chicago.
We were also joined by Chicago Transit Authority President Dorval Carter Jr., who has been a long-standing champion of City Year; on top of serving on our Board, Mr. Carter was one of the key stewards who developed the CTA's crucial support of City Year Chicago over 15 years ago! We were thrilled to have him speak to us (and he thoroughly enjoyed asking the corps 'How y'all feeling?'), and afterwards we presented him and the CTA with their very own City Year Boot!
We were also happy to be joined by representatives from Comcast, Wm Wrigley Jr Company, and the Serve Illinois Commission on National Service (our AmeriCorps partners here in Illinois) - the work that they do for us throughout the year is invaluable, and the fact that they also took the time to join us means a lot! Our Opening Day also served as the first event in Chicago's first-ever Red Jacket Weekend; events designed to engage and connect City Year alumni with one another, and with incoming corps members. We're lucky that so many City Year AmeriCorps alumni call Chicago home, and with events such as Red Jacket Weekend, we hope to see more and more alumni come out of the woodwork!
On Saturday, in commemoration with the 9/11 Day of Service, members and alumni participated in a service day at the Howe School of Excellence. Directly following the service, there was a picnic in a nearby park in order for everyone to relax and get connected/re-connected with alumni.
On Sunday, we opened up our new office for an Open House so that friends, families, and alumni could tour our office space and speak with our leadership staff to learn about the direction our organization is going, and our progress in achieving our long term impact across Chicago.
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate our Opening Day and Red Jacket Weekend with us! You're a part of City Year Chicago history, and we hope to see you again soon!
