Our 2017 Boston Marathon team come from diverse personal and professional backgrounds, but what unites them all is a strong belief in our service and desire to help our students reach their full potential. Here is a little info about them!
Jesse Carmen is a City Year Boston and City Year Tulsa alumna. She is a community advocate intern at DOVE (Domestic Violence Ended) and student at the Boston College School of Social Work. About her motivation to run, she writes, "As a corps member for City Year Boston, I served at the English High School with the most brilliant, resilient, hard working, hilarious 9th and 10th graders that I have ever met. They taught me more than any textbook could ever teach and any professor could ever lecture. My students had to overcome so many challenges thrown their way, and it was remarkable to see how resilient they were. I will be thinking about all the students at the English High School as I run the 26.2 miles for City Year Boston." This is her first marathon!
Kristina Craaybeek is an Events Specialist with City Year Boston partner Wellington Management, and has participated in service events with City Year Boston through her employer. This is also her first marathon!
Rob Markey is a partner at Bain & Company, Inc. Regarding his motivation, he writes: "I've been a volunteer and fundraiser for the organization since 1989, and I believe deeply in the impact City Year has on the students it serves, the communities in which it operates, and on the corps members who spend a year or two learning about the what it means to be an active, engaged citizen." This is his third marathon.
Aumkhae Sookprasert works at Srinagarind Hospital in Khon Kaen, Thailand and is on the faculty of medicine at Khon-kaen University. She has embodied the City Year spirit of "service to a cause greater than self" by dedicating her life to helping others through medicine. She is a family doctor to Providence Executive Director Pawn Nitichan. Aumkhae, affectionately known as Dr. Ae, is an avid participant in marathons and triathlons who has always dreamed of running the Boston Marathon.
