The City Year Boston Experience
The city of Boston is considered a world leader in innovation, education and the arts and is an ideal place to spend a year making an impact, growing as a leader and pursuing unique career opportunities. With a strong culture and rich history, Boston has evolved into a welcoming and energetic city that is full of young professionals.
As City Year’s founding site, City Year Boston has engaged more than 4,300 AmeriCorps members in service to the Boston community. City Year Boston is co-located with City Year National Headquarters and offers AmeriCorps members unique exposure into how a large nonprofit organization operates and access to prominent leaders.
Throughout the year, City Year Boston is committed to providing their AmeriCorps members with a rewarding experience by equipping them with the tools, resources and training to help students improve their performance in school, while simultaneously developing professional skills. In addition to full-time staff dedicated to the AmeriCorps member experience and career pathways, City Year Boston offers a wide range of opportunities to be active members of the community:
- City Year Boston’s Mentor Program allows AmeriCorps members to connect with a professional mentor from local corporations and nonprofits (including Deloitte, Comcast and more) based on their interests and goals.
- There are many opportunities to develop the career skills you seek to hone through various professional development groups. Service Reserves engage and lead volunteers in large scale service projects. The Comms Crew, Donor Ambassadors or Recruitment and Admissions Squad each engage donors and future AmeriCorps members through writing, public speaking and networking.
- City Year Boston’s Affinity Groups offer opportunities to connect with others who share similar identities and help foster inclusion at the site. Currently, there are three affinity groups: CY Pride, Women of Color and Men in Service.
- Corps Council, with representation from each school-based team, meets frequently with the Corps Director and other site leaders to discuss organizational policies and practices to improve the corps and service experience.
Why We Need You
While Boston’s nickname is The Hub, known for being a vibrant center for academia, business, tech and medicine, some students in Boston face significant challenges every day. As the largest school district in Massachusetts, the Boston Public Schools (BPS) serves more than 55,000 students across 125 schools. District-wide, more than 70% of students participate in a state assistance program (SNAP, healthcare or foster care). BPS has a diverse student population with 42% of students who identify as Hispanic or Latino, 35% Black, 14% White, and 9% Asian. For 45% of BPS students, English is not their first language.  BPS’s graduation rate is around 70%. City Year is a key partner to the Boston Public Schools in realizing its vision to create equitable learning opportunities for all students and develop the city’s future leaders. AmeriCorps members support teachers and staff in delivering instruction that serves the development of the whole child and is responsive to the diverse racial, cultural and linguistic needs of Boston youth. By engaging students, families and community organizations, City Year helps BPS achieve equity, access and results for all students.
How You Can Make a Difference
City Year Boston currently serves in 23 Boston Public Schools where these challenges are highly concentrated. Across these partner schools, AmeriCorps members engage with 12,000 students in need of extra support and resources in order to stay on track and to graduate on time. Given the challenges facing students and the community, City Year is playing a critical role in ensuring all students receive a quality education and realize they have what it takes to be successful. City Year’s near-peer approach allows students to connect and to develop relationships with AmeriCorps members in powerful ways. Often, students see themselves in their AmeriCorps members and are empowered by the idea that they have the potential grow up to be like them; several of our current AmeriCorps members credit their former City Year mentor as their reason for serving! City Year’s signature red jacket has been highly recognizable to local residents for nearly 30 years and the Boston site maintains vast local support from BPS, government leaders, and the business community, including more than 20 corporations.
City Year Boston is in need of passionate and dedicated young people to serve. With more than 76% of students tutored by AmeriCorps members last year improving their test scores, AmeriCorps members are truly making an impact.
