Dear City Year Community,

As you likely know, yesterday the Trump Administration announced that the President has ordered the end, effective six months from now, of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows undocumented immigrants—children as well as adults who came to the U.S. as children—to remain in the country.  DACA status protects 800,000 Dreamers, many of whom have only known the United States as their home.

We at City Year fully support and stand with DACA recipients and all Dreamers. These young people and their families are playing a tremendously important role in our communities, making very valuable contributions to schools, workplaces, and the nation at large. Putting Dreamers at risk of deportation and exile to countries where they may have never before lived is not only wrong but also unjust and cruel. This decision goes against our nation’s core values and many of the fundamental values that City Year holds dear. City Year has signed onto a statement put out by a national coalition in support of DACA recipients and dreamers, and we call on our nation's leaders in Congress to take legislative action to protect our nation's Dreamers permanently.

We will continue our daily work to help students and school succeed—including and especially those students whose protections are under threat by the repeal of DACA. We believe deeply in the potential of all students to be successful in school, and to become the next generation of this country’s entrepreneurs, teachers, and leaders.

At City Year, our Impact Services team is working on programmatic supports to address the needs of our students, many of whom are experiencing increased anxiety due to recent events. The People Development team is preparing additional resources to best support our organizational staff.

To our City Year AmeriCorps members as well as to our school-based staff—I hope you know that your presence in our students’ lives is needed more than ever. Through our commitment and service, we must continue to support students and remind them that City Year believes in them fully and stands emphatically with them every single day.

Yours in service,
Michael Brown
