Congratulations on accepting your offer to serve with City Year! We’re so thrilled you’ll be joining us in the coming weeks. During this time of excitement and new possibilities, we know you must have a lot of questions around the next item on your to-do list: registration day. We’re here to share some tips to help you prepare.

Registration day is a mandatory, in-person event held at your City Year site’s office. All 29 City Year sites have their own registration days. The purpose of registration day is to complete all steps involved in the hiring process such as signing employment paperwork, verifying your enrollment in AmeriCorps and checking that any required background checks are in progress. These are critical steps to ensure you can start accumulating volunteer hours and are eligible to receive City Year AmeriCorps member benefits, such as the Segal Education award and your bi-weekly stipend. Registration day also offers you an opportunity to meet site staff and fellow AmeriCorps members before the service year officially begins.

In order to successfully complete your onboarding, you must bring the following forms of identification to registration day*:

(* There may be additional items required based on your site, but these are the items needed at a minimum.)

Original document(s) to demonstrate your proof of US citizenship

Options include:

  • Your United States passport (unexpired) or passport card
  • A current, unexpired legal residence card
  • Your birth certificate (state issued or country issued; not a photocopy) with a government-issued photo ID. If you plan on bringing your birth certificate, it MUST meet these additional requirements:
    • Full name of the applicant
    • Date & place of birth
    • Raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal of issuing authority
    • Registrar’s signature
    • Full name of applicant’s parent(s) to be listed
    • Due to AmeriCorps regulations, shortened versions of birth certificates that contain the words “Abstract” or “Extract” cannot be accepted.

Original Social Security card

Your document must be original, not a duplicate or copy, and cannot be laminated.

You can guarantee a smoother registration day by completing your cyresource tasks as soon as you receive credentials to our onboarding system. These credentials are sent to AmeriCorps members via email from within 48 hours of confirming your spot on the team. Please complete all of the steps you’re prompted to, and when the progress wheel on your homepage says you’re 76% complete, you’re ready for registration day! The remaining steps will be completed in person.
