This year, 3,000 dedicated City Year AmeriCorps members have been serving full-time in schools across 29 U.S. cities. They’re more than halfway through a year of challenging yet impactful work, ensuring that the students they serve are supported academically, emotionally and socially, so they can thrive, both in and out of school.
The entire national service community celebrates the service of AmeriCorps members for a week each March. At City Year, we extend the celebration all month long. This year, for City Year AmeriCorps Member Appreciation Month, our entire community—corps and staff—came together to recognize our talented and dedicated AmeriCorps members who have chosen to give a year of service to help change the lives of students and their communities.
Here’s how sites across the network have been celebrating our amazing AmeriCorps members this month:
AmeriCorps Members serving with City Year Jacksonville certainly felt the love this month! Each staff member at the site made a special point to spend time with City Year teams, treating them to lunch and brightening their day by bringing them flowers. City Year Jacksonville staff also raffled off gift cards, yoga classes and professional guidance sessions over lunch all throughout the month!
City Year Chicago kicked off AmeriCorps Member Appreciation Month by deploying staff members to 28 schools to drop off boxes of snacks for their AmeriCorps members to enjoy. AmeriCorps members were also recognized through daily Instagram shoutouts that highlight school teams and share stories of their impact. To close out the month with a bang, City Year Chicago hosted a celebratory event complete with dessert bars and raffle prizes!
Staff members at City Year Columbus also showed support for their corps in a variety of ways. AmeriCorps members at this site were treated to ice cream bars, thank you cards signed by board member and alumni, a month of free yoga at a local studio and an alumni board-sponsored breakfast. Seems like City Year Columbus knows that the way to an AmeriCorps member’s heart is through food and acts of kindness!
AmeriCorps members serving at City Year New Hampshire were not only shown appreciation but they were also enrolled at Hogwarts for the month of March. They made Harry Potter-themed team banners, went on scavenger hunts in the City Year office to find the golden snitch and dressed up for spirit days. Teams were awarded pizza and dessert parties, self-care baskets and lunches for participating in the month of magic and wizardry!
At headquarters, staff members recognized City Year AmeriCorps Member Appreciation Month by participating in Project Postcard where staff shared notes of inspiration and gratitude to the 350 City Year teams serving across the network. Staff members also spent an afternoon putting together care packages filled with notes of encouragement, baked goods, school supplies and more!
We know that City Year AmeriCorps members show up every day and tirelessly support their students and we want to show them the same level of support! We thank them for all their hard work and dedication to student success. They’re truly an inspiration!
