Thinking of where you’d like to serve with City Year, but haven’t decided yet? City Year Orlando should rise to the top of your shortlist. It’s no surprise that Orlando was named one of the 10 fastest-growing cities in the country. Orlando has sunshine year-round, an average temperature of 82 degrees and an affordable cost of living, making the city a young professional’s paradise.

Beyond the amazing weather, vibrant community and—we know what you’re thinking—the theme parks, there’s some amazing work being done to support student success and educational equity.

More than 10,000 students are currently being supported by City Year AmeriCorps members in Orlando across eight public schools. AmeriCorps members are working one-on-one each day with students to strengthen their social-emotional and academic skills and help them succeed in college and career.

Here are five things you may not know about the benefits of serving in Orlando and how you can make a difference as a City Year AmeriCorps member.

Invest in Your Professional Future

Orlando has a strong economy, giving those who serve there opportunities to connect with other professionals and launch careers after their year of service. City Year Orlando invests in our corps through professional development experiences with site sponsors like networking, resume review and mock interviews.

For those looking to continue their education after their year of service, Orlando is also home to City Year University Partner Stetson University, as well as schools like Rollins College and the largest university by on-campus undergraduate enrollment, University of Central Florida. All offer a variety of educational and professional development opportunities. All AmeriCorps members who complete a full year of service are eligible for tuition scholarships in these locations.

Help the Next Generation

You’ll be working directly with students and building relationships to understand their educational and personal aspirations and to set attainable goals. In 2018, 68% of City Year Orlando students who received support from our AmeriCorps members made significant progress on key social-emotional skills related to college and career readiness.

City Year AmeriCorps members are also a big part of creating a positive school climate in the schools they serve, greeting students in the morning, working with them afterschool and planning fun school-wide events to enhance school culture and climate. In Orlando schools, 98% of partner teachers agree that AmeriCorps members fostered a positive learning environment for learning.

Have Fun Along the Way

We wouldn’t want you to forget that outside of service, Orlando offers an amazing array of activities and experiences. From open-air markets, bike trails, museums, arts, music and more, there’s a little something for everyone. And most days are sunny, so you won’t have to worry about the weather getting in your way. Read more about what’s fun to do in Orlando.
