“Why do I serve? I serve because I’ve seen first-hand how much service can impact lives.” –Dawnn Jaffier, 2011

Celebrating the Life of Dawnn Jaffier
The City Year community is both mourning the loss and celebrating the life of a beloved City Year Boston alum, Dawnn Jaffier. Dawnn was shot and killed while attending a community parade in Boston on August 23. She was an innocent victim of senseless gun violence. All of us at City Year are shocked and deeply saddened at her death, and our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with Dawnn's family, with her friends and colleagues, and with every one of the many lives she touched, including the entire City Year Boston community.

Dawnn grew up in Boston, attended Boston public schools, and was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She had a deep commitment to serving children and her community, and after college she served with City Year Boston during the 2010-2011 program year at the Tobin K-8 school, and then joined fellow AmeriCorps program Playworks for a second year of service to her community. She had just finished a summer working with children at the West End Boys and Girls Club in Boston.

Mike McGinn, Dawnn’s program manager when she was in the City Year Boston corps, shared that “Dawnn had a natural ability to connect and work with students; every student knew her name, and she theirs. She worked tirelessly to ensure every day’s lesson was successful and would meet the needs of all our students. When the after-school program she coordinated was full, Dawnn went above and beyond to find other programs to ensure students had a safe environment to be after school.” An alumni profile of Dawnn from 2013 on the City Year Boston blog speaks to her special spirit and deep commitment to working with children

City Year will be dedicating the service of the 2014-15 City Year Boston corps in Dawnn's memory and her legacy of service and deep commitment to the children of Boston. The violence that took her life must end, and we can help hasten that day and honor Dawnn's memory and commitment through our dedicated service to children and young people, in Boston, where Dawnn served with such deep commitment and energy, and beyond.
