City Year and Comcast NBCUniversal will mark a significant milestone this year: The 10,000 AmeriCorps member will take part in Comcast NBCUniversal’s annual Career Days. Hosted with City Year affiliates across the country, Comcast NBCUniversal executives, recruiters and human resources leaders spend a day coaching corps members through a series of sessions covering personal branding, leadership, networking, interview skills–and much more. 

During the recent Career Day in Philadelphia, Comcast’s senior manager of talent marketing, Kristin Dudley, shared how City Year corps members and alumni can get a leg up on their job search by managing their professional brands online, including social tools like LinkedIn:

Welcome back. I hope you learned a little more about yourself–whether you saw something or nothing–from those search results. When we are screening prospective candidates, my recruiter and I always conduct an Internet search. It’s a simple way to learn a little more about someone, and to see if they have taken the initiative to manage their online presence.  One way to begin building your online presence is through platforms like LinkedIn. An essential tactic that every professional should take is to not only establish a LinkedIn profile, but to enhance it in order to stand out from the crowd. Here are five tips to ensure you’re taking it to the next level:

1. ADD A PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT–A picture of you among a group of friends won’t do. Neither will a fish-face selfie. It’s time to brush your hair, put on a blazer, and ask a friend to take a picture of you from the shoulders up. Smile and say, “I’m in control of my career!”

2. CUSTOMIZE YOUR HEADLINE–Your LinkedIn headline is essentially your personal brand’s tagline. Express who you are and what you can do within 120 characters or less. This is your hook. Be memorable and interesting –why should I engage with you instead of the next profile I see?

3. KEEP YOUR SUMMARY UPDATED–Your summary is the area where you can provide readers with an up-to-date overview of who you are and where you would like to be. What makes you a great team member? What have you learned about yourself? Where do you see yourself 90 days from now? 

4. ADD RICH MEDIA–LinkedIn now provides users the opportunity to embed videos, website links and SlideShares to profiles. Consider composing new media that tells your story, or ensure you share what exists within your experience or summary. This makes your page more dynamic and ultimately more ambitious and attractive. 

5. ENGAGE–Just as you would pull yourself together for an in-person networking event, do the same for yourself online where the networking never stops. Post status updates that include links to relevant subject matter that your network would appreciate. Scroll through the homepage to see what others are posting and updating, provide “likes” and comments when appropriate. This is social networking –be social!

Ultimately, your online persona is up to you. The simplest way to impact it is by updating your LinkedIn profiles–and of course by also keeping your online persona professional no matter the platform. Think of your LinkedIn profile as your landing page. It’s likely that your profile will be at the top of the search results for your name. Take the occasion as a FREE and simple way to tell your story to prospective hiring managers. Of course, keep it clean of spelling and grammatical errors–ask someone to review it for you. Now, who is in control of your online presence?
