Who run the world? GIRLS. Today, March 8, we celebrate International Women's Day. International Women's Day is a celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. This fall, CYBR welcomed new Executive Director Ryann Denham Sanchez, who allowed us to pick her brain in honor of today's holiday.

How did your path ultimately lead to what you currently do?

I have a wide breadth of knowledge of the organization given all of the different roles I’ve filled over the years from operations to human potential to development. In each of these  positions, I have learned how critical strong systems and process are to the success of an organization, how to build transformational partnerships, and I have had the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the education landscape in our city. I believe all of this and more prepared me to lead City Year Baton Rouge into an important new phase of growth.

What mistakes did you learn the most from?

My greatest lesson learned in my time at City Year is to ask for help. You can’t do it all by yourself.

Do you love what you do? Why?

Yes! At City Year you have a ton of opportunity for growth so there are always new and exciting challenges. As Executive Director, I love the high level of collaboration I am able to have with community partners that are working towards the same game changing outcomes for students across Baton Rouge.

What’s been your most exciting moment with City Year?

We just celebrated our tenth anniversary gala- so there were so many special moments leading up to the evening. My first gala at City Year Baton Rouge in 2013 we featured an AmeriCorps member and his student, and this year we brought them back again to share how City Year has had such a life changing impact on the student even three years later as he makes plans for his life post high school.

What keeps you inspired?

I am most inspired by our corps members who commit a year of their lives (or more!) to serve Baton Rouge students. They give everything of themselves during the City Year.

Advice to young people?

PITW #9 (Bing!): Create your own environment for success. Go beyond your job description and do more than what is expected of you.
