by Caroline Watkins, AmeriCorps Member on the Capital Area United Way team at Capitol Middle School
At Capitol Middle School, an important initiative for boosting attendance rates and keeping students in school and on track for graduation is the monthly AttenDANCE. Students with perfect attendance for the month – no tardies, no detentions, and no suspensions - are celebrated through a partnership between City Year and the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. They are invited to the gym to dance with their favorite corps members during fifth block as a reward for attending school and arriving on time every day. As part of the partnership, Taco Bell representatives were present at the November AttenDANCE to celebrate those students who had improved their attendance rates. City Year tracks student attendance, behavior, and course performance as crucial indicators of high school graduation rates, and showing up for school on a daily basis is the first step to success. AttenDANCEs are the grooviest way to end a month of perfect attendance!
