This morning, I led circle just like we have been doing since the first day of BTA. “Today is Friday, August 25th and we’ve all lived to serve another day…and that’s a BEAUTIFUL thing!” Wait a second...it’s already August 25th?! Where has the time gone?

Three weeks ago, I had no idea what to expect out of this year. I was beyond excited to be returning to the middle school that I served at last year, but this time I was bringing six (now eight!) new faces along with me. Already, in this short amount of time, my team has demonstrated just how committed they are to serving our students and “making better happen”. It’s only been three weeks, and my team is already leading effective (and creative!) small group interventions, participating in staff meetings about goals and student data, planning whole-school attendance initiatives, and hosting staff appreciation celebrations…in just THREE WEEKS! I cannot even imagine what the next three, nine, or THIRTY EIGHT weeks are going to look like! I am so thankful to have a team (and manager!) with a collective “can-do” attitude and passion for service. Geaux Tigers!

I checked in with some of my fellow Team Leaders to see how their school year was starting off, and here’s what they had to say…

The Broadmoor High team is back for a new year and on to new things. A new team, a new City Year room, and expanding into an all new grade! With a whole new attitude, we are ready to take our school to new heights!”  - Brea Butler, Senior AmeriCorps Member proudly serving at Broadmoor High School

“The Bridge Academy and College Prep team have had a great start to the year! We are honored to be the first City Year team to work in these schools and we have been working hard to bring City Year culture into a community where the teachers, administration and staff are so eager to have us.”  - Tyler Aitken, Senior AmeriCorps Member proudly serving at Bridge Academy and Baton Rouge College Prep

“The combo team at Celerity Lanier and Celerity Crestworth has been extremely flexible diving into their first month of service.  They have grown from an initial team of 6 to a team of 17. They have repeatedly welcomed new corps members, and are continually growing as a team both in numbers and spirit.” - Susan Nourse, Senior AmeriCorps Member proudly serving at Celerity Lanier and Celerity Crestworth Charter Schools

“Broadmoor Middle School is off to an amazing start! Our team has been building strong relationships with the staff and students at the school. We have been getting involved with various clubs on campus and are looking forward to our back to school dance!” - Hannah Harrison, Senior AmeriCorps Member proudly serving at Broadmoor Middle School

“Melrose is starting off the year strong! We are building team and getting to know our new partner teachers! We love pumping up our bulldog spirit by creating new morning power greetings for our students!” - Grace Trocano, Senior AmeriCorps Member proudly serving at Melrose Elementary School
