Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development offers City Year AmeriCorps members, alums and staff
50% scholarships
Up to five eligible City Year applicants per year will receive a guaranteed one-year scholarship amounting to 50% of the then current tuition rate. The scholarship can only be applied to full-time tuition towards any master’s or certified advanced graduate program.
Scholarships are renewable at the sole discretion of Wheelock.
Scholarships are awarded to City Year AmeriCorps members and alums who successfully complete one term of service and current City Year staff employed for at least two years.
Applicants will be considered for additional merit-based awards depending on the strength of their application.
33% scholarships
All admitted eligible City Year applicants per year will receive a guaranteed one-year scholarship amounting to 33% of the current tuition rate. The scholarship can only be applied to any Wheelock graduate certificate, masters or CAGS program- evening, part-time or online.
Eligible programs
Within the following graduate programs, more than 30 areas of full-time study are eligible for the scholarships described above:
- Master of Arts
- Master of Arts in teaching
- Master of Education (online options: education for equity and social justice and world language education)
- Master of Science
- Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study
Additional benefits
- Application fee waiver
- Enrollment deferral: a one-year deferral for students admitted to the program who decide to serve additional time with City Year before starting with Wheelock. If a scholarship recipient decides to defer enrollment, the recipient forfeits the scholarship for the current academic year but may re-apply for the scholarship for the upcoming year.
- Deposit waiver to hold seat once accepted.

To access the application fee waiver and apply for the scholarship
Once your online application for admission is 100% complete and to your satisfaction, please contact Graduate Admissions at whegrad@bu.edu and request your City Year application fee waiver. Please do not submit your application until you have received your application fee waiver which will be sent via email.
To be considered for the scholarship, a service verification letter must be requested by emailing alumni@cityyear.org with “BU Wheelock” in the subject line. Within the email, include the site where you served and your AmeriCorps graduation month and year. This letter will be sent electronically by City Year to Wheelock College’s admissions office and added to your applicant file.
