Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency

Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency offers City Year alums

Teaching residency

Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency provides program participants with highly supported cohort communities, a social justice and equity orientation and mentorship from a core group of professors committed to your success. Throughout the program, Resident Teachers earn one of two teaching credentials: education specialist credential (K-12) with an optional STEM specialization or a single-subject credential in math or science for secondary level.

Resident Teachers complete credential requirements in three semesters and master’s degree requirements in an additional three semesters, as well as commit to four years of teaching upon program completion. Resident Teachers also receive the following benefits:

  • $15,000 stipend, with an additional $10,000 scholarship on a need’s basis
  • yearlong apprenticeship co-teaching with a mentor teacher
  • master’s degree in integrated STEM education
  • substitute teaching assignment one day a week to gain additional experience and income
  • networking and support for employment with the residency’s district partners

Why City Year loves Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency

Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency is an 18- to 24-month intensive credential and master’s degree program founded on principles of social justice. It recruits highly talented people from diverse backgrounds who are committed to becoming transformative teachers. With the co-leadership of Cal State University Los Angeles and the Center for Collaborative Education, the residency provides aspiring teachers with rigorous, practical coursework and training, which includes co-teaching with a mentor teacher for an entire school year in systemically under-resourced schools in Los Angeles. The City Year experience is a strong indicator of future success at Los Angeles Urban Teacher Residency, and serving with City Year strengthens an applicant’s chances of being selected as a Resident Teacher.
