Capital Teaching Residency offers City Year alums

Teaching residency

Capital Teaching Residents commit to teaching for a minimum of three years in Washington, D.C, and spend the first year of this commitment—your residency year—training in a classroom with a highly effective lead teacher. Following your residency year, you will teach two additional years at KIPP DC or a partner public school in Washington, D.C, and receive the following benefits:

  • competitive entry-level salary ($45,000 per year)
  • medical, dental and vision insurance
  • licensure costs covered for District of Columbia teacher certification in early childhood education, science, math or English language arts
  • discounted tuition for select university partners
  • ongoing professional development activities and networking opportunities

Why City Year loves Capital Teaching Residency

Capital Teaching Residency is a nationally recognized, highly selective, three-year teacher training program that provides a pathway for new teachers to develop into outstanding educators. It is a cornerstone program of KIPP DC, which educates and supports students in the District of Columbia who have historically had limited access to high-quality educational options. As a Capital Teaching Resident, you play an active role in KIPP DC’s mission.

Capital Teaching Residency empowers students and increases their access to opportunities by creating a talent pipeline of highly effective teachers in D.C.; retaining highly effective teachers in D.C. public and public charter schools and shaping high-quality teacher preparation programs nationally. Experience with City Year strengthens an applicant’s competitiveness and chances for being selected for the Capital Teaching Residency.
