University of Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program

City Year is proud to partner with the University of Chicago’s Urban Teacher Education Program, a leading teacher preparation program preparing teachers of the highest caliber for Chicago Public Schools while empirically testing the model for urban teacher preparation, offering approximately 50% off of tuition during the second year.

The University of Chicago’s Urban Teacher Education Program offers City Year AmeriCorps members, alums and staff

50% scholarships

The scholarship is equal to an approximately 50% tuition reduction and is awarded in the second year of the Master of Arts in teaching program to all admitted City Year applicants per year.

Scholarships are awarded to City Year AmeriCorps members and alums who complete at least one term of service and City Year staff employed for at least two years.

Additional benefits

  • Application fee waiver
  • Enrollment deferral: a one-year deferral for students admitted to the program who decide to serve additional time with City Year before starting with the Urban Teacher Education Program. Admitted students who defer are required to submit $250 as a tuition deposit and an additional $250 to defer; all payments will be credited toward tuition once they enroll.

Why City Year loves the University of Chicago’s Urban Teacher Education Program

The University of Chicago’s Urban Teacher Education Program is a highly selective, two-year Master of Arts in teaching program. Alums then receive up to three years of post-graduation support, making the Urban Teacher Education Program a unique five-year experience. Students admitted to the program are committed to teaching in systemically under-resourced communities and dedicated to working toward educational equity. They often have experience working with youth from systemically under-resourced communities and demonstrate persistence, curiosity and the capacity to lead.

Urban Teacher Education Program graduates engage in teaching as a highly intellectual career and are classroom-based instructional leaders and agents for educational equity in their schools and communities. For additional information about the program, please click here.
