Why City Year loves KIPP
KIPP Public Schools is a nonprofit network of 270 public charter schools with nearly 10,000 educators and more than 160,000 students and alums serving elementary, middle and high school students. KIPP has a 20-year track record of preparing students in educationally under-served communities for success in college and life. KIPP believes that great education transforms lives and all students can learn and achieve at high levels if given the opportunity. The City Year experience is a strong indicator of future success at KIPP, and serving with City Year strengthens an applicant’s chances of being selected to the teaching residency programs with KIPP Massachusetts, New Jersey, Northern California and Texas.
KIPP Massachusetts Teaching Fellows: spend each day teaching and learning alongside an experienced teacher with the goal of becoming a KIPP Massachusetts lead teacher. Resident Teachers are eligible for a partial tuition scholarship to Boston University’s Graduate School of Education if you are interested in pursuing a master’s degree and Massachusetts Teacher’s License.
KIPP New Jersey Teacher in Residence: receive the hands-on experience and certification you need to become an excellent teacher at KIPP’s world-class schools. Teachers in residence will fuse theory and practice as you work alongside experienced teachers in the classroom while earning your teaching certification.
KIPP Northern California Teacher Residency: combines theory and practice by pairing Residents with a high-performing mentor teacher while simultaneously completing master’s level coursework and attending curated resident seminars. At the conclusion of the program, you will earn your master’s in education from Alder Graduate School of Education, your preliminary teaching credential and be eligible for job placement within a school.
KIPP Texas Relay Residency – Houston: provides a unique opportunity for aspiring teachers to learn alongside mentor teachers, while earning a master’s degree in teaching and Texas teaching certificate. This prestigious, paid, two-year residency immerses Residents in intensive training through coursework and deliberate practice before stepping into the classroom full time your second year in the program.
