Indianapolis Teaching Fellows offers City Year alums

Teaching residency

Indianapolis Teaching Fellows receive in-depth coaching, grounded in research and evidence-based practices that impact teacher practice and increase student achievement. With over 700 alums, it’s likely you will be teaching in the building with another Fellow or an alum of Indianapolis Teaching Fellows, which provides a sense of community, camaraderie and support.

Indianapolis Teaching Fellows receive the following benefits:

  • competitive first-year salary (average is $50,400)
  • comprehensive coverage, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance
  • full teaching certification and a Master of Arts in Teaching through the program at Marian University
  • AmeriCorps Education Award: Upon successfully completing the first and second years of teaching in a systemically under-resourced school, Fellows enrolled in the TNTP AmeriCorps Program are eligible for an education award of up to $6,345 (totaling $12,700 for two years). AmeriCorps awards can be applied to tuition at Marian University, offsetting the $12,450 Marian tuition. All applicants are limited to two education awards total, so City Year applicants may only be eligible for one additional award.
  • Black Educator Excellence Cohort: supports new Black enrollees in transitioning to the teaching profession to help address barriers to the classroom that Black teachers often face. This cohort provides support, including some financial, exam preparation support and builds a networking and fellowship community with other Black educators. All participants who identify as Black/African American who are enrolled in the 2023-24 cohort with Indianapolis Teaching Fellows are eligible for the Black Educator Excellence Cohort.

Why City Year loves Indianapolis Teaching Fellows

Since 2007, Indianapolis Teaching Fellows has provided aspiring teachers from diverse backgrounds with an affordable and accelerated pathway into the classroom. Indianapolis Teaching Fellows partners with Indianapolis Public Schools and charter schools in Center Township to provide exceptional educators for local students. While attending Marian University, Fellows receive the personalized training and coaching needed to help students succeed.

During your first two years as a full-time teacher, you will complete certification coursework with Marian University, where you will earn a Master of Arts in Teaching, which provides you a Transition to Teaching Permit. This program is specifically designed to meet the needs of alternate route teachers; in fact, Indianapolis Teaching Fellows are the only participants. Tuition for Marion University is $12,450 over two years. The City Year experience strengthens an applicant’s competitiveness and chances for being selected as an Indianapolis Teaching Fellow.

To apply

City Year AmeriCorps members and alums who apply for Indianapolis Teaching Fellows will be eligible for a priority application process and to bypass the initial short-answer essay questions. When submitting your online application, complete all pages. On the “application questions” page, use the code “City Year” in response to the short-answer application questions. By inputting the code, City Year applicants get automatically pushed to the interview round.

Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis, so apply early to increase your chance of admission.

Please compare the start date for Indianapolis Teaching Fellows to the anticipated City Year graduation date.
