Our Impact

"City Year has delivered for us. It is one of the brightest and most worthwhile programs – and one of the most effective programs we have.  And it is effective because it is young people reaching out to young people. City Year corps members are literally living and walking role models for our students, and they show our students what the possibilities are.”
 – Paul Vallas, Superintendent
Recovery School District of New Orleans

ON COMMUNITIES

Since 1988, City Year’s more than 10,400 corps members have:

  • Served 1,060,000 children
  • Completed 16 million hours of service
  • Partnered with more than 1050 corporations and 3,100 service organizations
  • Engaged more than 1,015,000 citizens in service

ON SCHOOLS

“Last semester our school was 63rd out of 63 elementary schools in attendance. After one semester, we are 18 out of 63. I attribute that gain to City Year.”
– Janet Perez, Principal, Brackenridge Elementary School, San Antonio

The age and diversity of the City Year corps allows members to connect better than anyone else with the children they serve, helping them make good life choices and encouraging them to come to school, stay in school and thrive.

Rarely do students have access to constant mentoring and support throughout the day. City Year corps members address that need and provide a unique value-add to schools because they are with students from the beginning of the day until the close of after-school programs.

City Year corps members make a difference in schools by:

  • Improving student attendance
  • Improving academic performance
  • Reducing incidences of violence
  • Improving the learning environment
  • Improving the commitment to volunteering and helping others
  • Enhancing the ability to connect and work with diverse group

ON YOUNG LEADERS

Research undertaken by City Year establishes that as corps members help the students they serve, they are also becoming "leaders for life."  Regular surveys, studies and assessments are conducted to analyze and improve City Year service. Click here to read highlights and studies.
