City Year Service Days

CYFADNYSD 2005

“What I loved the most about my City Year was the fact that I realized the amount of power our service had. It makes you feel like you can change the world.”

- Michael Stevens, City Year Louisiana Alum & Current City Year Washington, DC Staff

At City Year, we realize that a full-time volunteer commitment is not possible for everyone. City Year aspires to make community service opportunities more accessible to all individuals through service days. These one-day events engage local residents with high school and college students, community organizations, corporate employees, and other volunteers to serve together on projects that make a transformational, inspirational and sustainable difference in the DC community.

A typical City Year service day involves 50-800 people, and takes place at a DC public school, recreation center, homeless shelter or local park. Examples of service projects include revitalizing playgrounds, painting murals, reclaiming green spaces, planting community gardens, and renovating and painting housing units, classrooms, hallways, and libraries.

City Year Washington, DC invites volunteers of all ages to join our service days throughout the year. Below are the dates for our service days; we hope you'll join us!

  • Saturday, October 22, 2011 (Make A Difference Day)
  • Monday, January 16, 2012 (MLK Day)

If you are interested in joining us for service or want more information, please contact Civic Engagement Program Manager Daniel Lawson at dlawson@cityyear.org or 202-742-7372.
