EVERY 26 SECONDS, A STUDENT DROPS OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL IN AMERICA.
• The graduation rate in DC Public Schools is lower than the national average.
• In Wards 7 and 8 of Washington, DC, only 4 out of 10 students who enter 9th grade will go on to graduate.
• High school dropouts are three times more likely than college graduates to be unemployed.
• High school dropouts are eight times more likely to be in jail or prison than high school graduates.
• The more than 12 million students projected to drop out over the next 10 years will cost the nation $3 trillion in lost taxes, increased social services, and crime-related costs.
KEEPING STUDENTS IN SCHOOL & ON TRACK
City Year Washington, DC leverages the talent, energy and idealism of diverse 17-24 year olds – called corps members – to serve for one year as tutors, mentors, and role models, helping students stay in school and on track to graduate from high school. In partnership with DC Public Schools, teams of City Year corps members serve all day, every day, in 14 public schools, providing interventions aimed at improving student attendance, behavior, and course performance in math and English.
