Honoring a Lifetime Commitment to Service and Idealism: TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel
City Year Washington, DC is honored to award the 2010 Lifetime of Idealism Award to Richard Stengel, an advocate and champion for service opportunities for all Americans.
Currently the managing editor of TIME, Richard Stengel has had a distinguished career in print journalism. Stengel has written for notable publications such as The New Yorker, The New Republic, and the New York Times. In addition, he has authored three books, including collaborating with Nelson Mandela on Mandela’s best-selling autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. Most recently, Stengel was President and CEO of the National Constitution Center, a museum and education center in Philadelphia. He can also frequently be seen on television as a guest commentator.
Throughout his career, Stengel has always found ways to give back. He’s a member of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism’s Board of Advisors and City Year’s Board of Trustees. But perhaps his most active community involvement has been as an advocate for national service. As co-moderator of the ServiceNation Presidential Candidates Forum in 2008, he helped to bring national service to the forefront of the national agenda by pressing presidential candidates Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain on their plans to expand national service. Additionally, he has testified on Capitol Hill about the importance of service and in September 2007 helped significantly increase the public’s awareness by writing a TIME cover story entitled, “The Case for National Service.” Stengel has since continued his commitment to promoting service, pledging that TIME will dedicate one issue each September to discussing volunteerism, philanthropy and service.
City Year Washington, DC is proud to honor Richard Stengel with the 2010 Lifetime of Idealism Award for his commitment to promoting and expanding opportunities for Americans to serve.
Recognizing the 2010 Idealists of the Year
In addition to honoring Richard Stengel, City Year Washington, DC will recognize the 2010 Idealists of the Year. The Idealism in Action Gala is a great way for area companies to recognize an extraordinary community-minded employee as a 2010 Idealist of the Year. An Idealist of the Year is an employee volunteer who seeks to improve our community, nation, or world through acts of service and volunteerism. Recipients may have made a difference in the life of one person, an organization, or an entire community. All table sponsors have the opportunity to honor an Idealist from their organization who will be publicly recognized at the event. CLICK HERE for more information about honoring an Idealist.
