City Year Washington, DC unites young people, ages 17 to 24, from all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world.  As tutors, mentors, and role models, these young leaders make a difference in the lives of children and transform schools and neighborhoods across DC. You can make a difference in the lives of children growing up in Washington, DC by joining City Year.
  • Every 26 seconds an american student drops out of public high school.
  • According to the National Center for Education Research, 89% of DC students performed below the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) proficient level in 2005.
  • In urban public schools that serve primarily low income and Latino or African American youth, 40%-60% of entering freshman do not graduate from high school.
  • According to a 2003 CDC report, 1 in every 20 adults in DC is infected with HIV.  In addition, DC has the highest rates of new HIV cases in the nation – a rate that is 12 times the national average.

As a City Year corps member you will work in Washington, DC schools, after-school programs, and neighborhoods, where you will become a powerful role model to youth and help address these pressing community problems.
