Our Service Programs

City Year Washington, DC corps members serve on 10-person teams, each of which address a pressing need in the DC community.  As a corps member, you will provide critically needed services to DC in the following areas:

SCHOOL-BASED SERVICE

Through City Year's Whole School Whole Child service model, you will serve in one school all day for 10 months as a tutor, mentor and role model to help improve student attendance, behavior and coursework in grades K-8 through:

  • 1.1 - 01Academic Support
    • providing in-school academic assistance, small group tutoring, and one-on-one tutoring to DC Public School students.
  • After-School Programming
    • leading after-school programs that include an hour of tutoring and homework help, followed by an hour of enrichment activities focused on topics such as drama, music and community service.
  •  Positive School Climate
    • creating a positive and welcoming environment by implementing lunch and recess enrichment clubs, organizing school-wide assemblies and service days, and engaging parents through workshops, student showcases, and newsletters.

HIV/AIDS Outreach, Prevention, and Education (HOPE) Program
In partnership with Metro TeenAIDS, corps members deliver a 10-week CDC-approved curriculum to 7th-12th grade students at middle schools and high schools throughout DC.  Through role-playing, brainstorming, small group discussion, and video presentations, corps members empower youth to protect themselves from the dangers of HIV/AIDS, prevent infection, and build confidence in their ability to make healthy and smart decisions.

Camp City Year
In addition to the programs that City Year Washington, DC runs continuously throughout the year, City Year also hosts a spring vacation camp for children during the DC Public Schools' Spring Break, called Camp City Year. Camp City Year fills a critical need during spring vacation by offering an exciting week of learning and fun for elementary school children in Washington, DC. Held at multiple locations throughout DC, Camp City Year offers a safe and structured environment that keeps students actively engaged in programs and activities centered on the theme of community service.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Young Heroes Program
Corps members plan and run a six-month Saturday service-learning program for a diverse group of DC middle school students called Young Heroes.  The Young Heroes program runs each year from January to May and develops middle school youth into active civic leaders through community service and utilizes an interactive curriculum that focuses on teaching young people about their community.  Young Heroes pledge to serve at least 100 hours during the program and earn the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for their efforts.

City Heroes Program
City Heroes is City Year’s youth leadership program for high school age students.  It is a weekend leadership development and social awareness program where high school students learn to lead others in tackling issues that directly affect their communities. City Year corps members run the program which engages 14-18 year olds from the DC Metro area in a series of monthly overnight retreats and Saturday service days from December through May.  Participants learn about the social issues in their communities, identify ways they can lead others to address these issues, and help create positive change through hands-on community service.
