As a City Year corps member you will make a difference in children’s lives by enhancing the academic, civic and social opportunities of youth across Seattle/King County. You will bring communities together through service and you will demonstrate the power of young people in service.
IN-SCHOOL SERVICE PROGRAMS
Through City Year's Whole School, Whole Child service model, you will serve as a tutor, mentor and role model to help improve student attendance, behavior and coursework in grades K-9 by providing:
- Academic Support - You will provide small group and one-on-one tutoring in literacy and math.
- Attendance Monitoring and Support - You will work closely with students to monitor and improve their daily attendance through morning greeting of all students, school-wide and classroom incentive programs for perfect attendance, and communications with parents/guardians.
- Positive Behavior Support - You will coach students toward positive behavior through school-wide and classroom incentive programs, informal and formal mentoring, and report card goal-setting.
- After-School Programming - You will lead students in an hour of tutoring and homework help, followed by enrichment activities focused on topics such as leadership, community service, and social justice issues.
- Positive School Climate - You will lead in-school programs that create a welcoming environment in school by implementing lunch enrichment clubs, assisting with school-wide assemblies, and holding school-wide events like family literacy nights and talent shows.
When serving in the schools of Seattle and King County, you will provide targeted in-class tutoring and mentorship for students. You will help promote academic success for at-risk and low-achieving studends.
AFTER-SCHOOL SERVICE PROGRAMS
City Year Seattle/King County corps members serve in after-school programs to provide students with a safe, structured, and engaging environment.
COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION
In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects such as:
- Painting murals
- Planting gardens
- Creating play spaces
- Renovating schools
- Refurbishing community centers
By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service.
