As a tutor and mentor with City Year, you will make a difference in children’s lives and help develop a new generation of leaders. City Year Seattle/King County service programs include in-school and after-school service, youth leadership, and community engagement.
IN-SCHOOL SERVICE PROGRAMS
When serving in the schools of Seattle and King County, you will provide targeted in-class tutoring and mentorship for students. You will help promote academic success for at-risk and low-achieving students, particularly in the area of literacy.
Getting Youth Beyond Barriers in School (GYBBIS)
During school hours, suspended middle school youth from Seattle and Highline School Districts participate in a curriculum that includes academic support, leadership development, drug and alcohol education, and on-going mentorship beyond the youth’s suspension.
Foster Care Support
Corps members work in partnership with Casey Family Programs to serve children and youth affiliated with the King County foster care system. Services provided to foster care youth include after-school programs, high school recovery credits, mentoring and tutoring.
AFTER-SCHOOL SERVICE PROGRAMS
City Year Seattle/King County corps members serve in after-school programs to provide students with a safe, structured, and engaging environment.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP
One of the important ways City Year Seattle/King County corps members share their belief in service and their commitment to helping children is by leading programs that teach Seattle and King County elementary, middle school, and high school students about their ability to make a difference.
Starfish Corps
In the Starfish Corps, third through fifth graders experience a “mini-City Year,” learning about diversity, the environment, world hunger and conflict resolution in this literacy-based service program.
Young Heroes
Young Heroes is City Year’s premier youth leadership initiative. Middle school students serve 100 hours on Saturdays from January through May and earn the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award for their efforts. For more information on Young Heroes, click here.
City Heroes
City Heroes is a weekend leadership development and social awareness program for high school students, who learn to lead others in tackling issues that directly affect their communities. For more information on City Heroes, click here.
COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION
In addition to helping schools and students reach new heights, City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects such as:
- Painting murals
- Planting gardens
- Creating play spaces
- Renovating schools
- Refurbishing community centers
By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service.
