City Year Seattle/King County deploys diverse teams of corps members to high-poverty schools in our nation’s most underserved urban school communities. Serving full-time in elementary, middle and high schools, corps members help improve student attendance, behavior, and course performance – all of which research confirms are the early warning indicators of a student’s likelihood to graduate from high school.

Corps members work in partnership with Seattle Public Schools, acting as positive role models while providing academic support and literacy tutoring to students. Other City Year programs partner include local, community-based organizations who share a vision of social change that addresses the critical needs of the community and its youth.

The Whole School, Whole Child Team

The Whole School, Whole Child (WSWC) model operates with three components: academic support, positive school climate, and after-school activities. This set of components is holistically integrated to maximize the impact of corps members every day from 8am to 6pm and include the following activities:

  • Attendance Monitoring and Incentive Programs – Corps members monitor and improve attendance through special initiatives with students and communication to parents.
  • Behavior Support – Corps members coach students toward positive behavior through general instruction, mentoring and incentives.
  • Course Performance: Math and English – Corps members tutor one-on-one, in small groups and during whole class activities.

The Whole School, Whole Child service partners include:

  • Dearborn Park Elementary School
  • Roxhill Elementary School
  • West Seattle High School
  • Wing Luke Elementary School

The Diplomas Now Team

In our Diplomas Now program, City Year corps members provide the Whole School, Whole Child program in an enhanced collaboration with Talent Development and Communities In Schools.
