A Day at City Year
When you serve with City Year every day is a chance to make a difference. To give you a glimpse into what a day may look like, a corps member shares her Monday with you:
8:15am: Meet for team circles with our individual teams in preparation for Unity Rally at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown San Jose. Unity Rally consists of PT (physical training) and the DB (Daily Briefing). Unity Rally prepares us for a powerful week of service and ensures
that we all have important information for week.
8:45am: Travel to school 30 minutes away from office. It’s nice because my team gets a chance to talk about the week before we get to school.
9:30am: Walk onto school’s campus. This is the BEST part of the week. The kids are so excited, we hear “CITY YEAR, CITY YEAR!”
10:00am: In class support: We rotate classrooms to ensure that teachers have enough support to teach their lessons.
11:00am: One-on-one tutoring: We pull out students who need extra help catching up to the rest of the class or who have a hard time understanding the classroom material due to language barriers.
11:30am: Recess!
12:00pm: Small group tutoring: We tutor small groups of students on subjects such as reading and math.
1:00pm: Lunch (school graciously provides us with school lunch!)
2:00pm: Planning time: This is when we get ready for our after-school programs.
2:30pm: After-School Program (Starfish Corps, Dance Club, Science Club, Tech Club-all after school programs have a built in homework center).
5:30pm: Debrief and break from service.
