City Year Patch

Our Service Programs

As a City Year corps member you will make a difference in children’s lives by enhancing the academic, civic and social opportunities of youth across Santa Clara County. You will bring communities together through service and you will demonstrate the power of young people in service.

City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley service programs include school based service programs, youth leadership programs, and community transformation programs.

School-Based Service

Through City Year's Whole School, Whole Child service model, you will serve as a tutor, mentor and role model to help improve student attendance, behavior and coursework in grades K-8 by providing:

  • Academic Support - You will provide small group and one-on-one tutoring in literacy and math.
  • Attendance Monitoring and Support - You will work closely with students to monitor and improve their daily attendance through morning greeting of all students, school-wide and classroom incentive programs for perfect attendance, and communications with parents/guardians.
  • Positive Behavior Support - You will coach students toward positive behavior through school-wide and classroom incentive programs, informal and formal mentoring, and report card goal-setting.
  • After-School Programming - You will lead students in an hour of tutoring and homework help, followed by enrichment activities focused on topics such as leadership, community service, and social justice issues.
  • Positive School Climate - You will lead in-school programs that create a welcoming environment in school by implementing lunch enrichment clubs, assisting with school-wide assemblies, and holding school-wide events like family literacy nights and talent shows.

Youth Leadership

Corps members engage elementary school youth in community service and issue based learning through the Starfish Corps after-school program and middle school youth through the Heroes program. In both service-learning programs,  youth experience a “mini-City Year,” learning about diversity, the environment, world hunger and conflict resolution.

Community Transformation

Corps members design and facilitate physical service days and large scale events, engaging hundreds of volunteers throughout San Jose and the Silicon Valley to bring people of all backgrounds together.City Year corps members transform communities through physical service projects such as:

  • Painting murals
  • Planting gardens
  • Creating playspaces
  • Renovating schools
  • Refurbishing community centers

By engaging community members, corporate partners, and civic leaders in this work, corps members help share the power of service.
