Each year across the network, City Year organizes large-scale service projects that bring together the community to transform a neighborhood or school in celebration of Global Youth Service Day. On April 16, 2011, City Year San José/Silicon Valley brought together over 150 volunteers from Bank of America, Cisco, the Majestic Way Elementary PTA, as well as alumni, friends and community members to transform Majestic Way Elementary School in San José. Throughout the day, City Year corps members and volunteers completed 16 projects, including 6 large murals, 6 construction projects such as building picnic tables and benches, 3 blacktop murals and digging and planting a garden.
California State Representative Mike Honda, San José City Councilmember Kansen Chu and his wife Daisy Chu toured the campus and spoke at the GYSD closing ceremony, explaining the importance of the work being done and thanking the volunteers who came.

Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service projects and service-learning. Established in 1988, GYSD is the largest service event in the world and is now celebrated in over 100 countries. On GYSD, children and youth address the world’s most critical issues in partnership with families, schools, community and faith-based organizations, businesses and governments.
