Summer Leadership Academy 2011
On Tuesday, August 16, 2011, City Year San José/Silicon Valley completed our third annual Summer Leadership Academy! Summer Leadership Academy was held at Mildred Goss Elementary School, one of our valued partner schools. We engaged over 200 students from our five partner schools in an effort to build excitement for school as well as train 53 incoming City Year San José/Silicon Valley corps members for their next 10 months of full-time service in schools.
We provided over 2,800 hours of direct service to students during Summer Leadership Academy. Corps members led students in Math and Literacy lessons and facilitated discussions on how students can be peace builders in their community. Students also participated in Healthy Choices enrichment, where they learned the importance of exercise, how to read nutrition labels, and healthy eating habits. Each corps member also received 24 hours of training in a variety of areas including Behavior Management, Literacy and Math tutoring, and Building Student Relationships. Corps members attended trainings during half of the day and led their own classroom during the other half, allowing them to directly apply strategies and techniques they learned during training in their classrooms.
We reached over 200 off-track students, from 1st to 8th grade, encouraging students to get excited for the upcoming school year and preparing them for academic success by helping them master Literacy and Math standards.
Corps members and students alike are now ready for a successful school year. Thank you to all who have helped make this year’s Summer Leadership Academy a great success.
