City Year San José/Silicon Valley's "A Day ON, Not a Day OFF."
On Monday, January 17, 2011, thousands of volunteers joined City Year’s 1,750 corps members and staff at 20 City Year sites across the nation to serve their communities on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Each year, City Year celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy with a large-scale, powerful day of service. At Daniel Lairon Elementary School in the Franklin-McKinley School District in San José, over 100 City Year corps members, staff, and volunteers from Bank of America, Starbucks, and Reading Partners came together to transform the campus. Here is what we accomplished:
- Planted over 60 flowers and shrubs
- Built bookshelves for classrooms
- Painted the blacktop, including a world map
- Created over 20 panel murals to be hung around the campus
- Painted alphabet murals and touched up doors and walls inside classrooms
- Organized the teacher resource room
Thank you to all of our partners and volunteers for a powerful day of service!
With special thanks to Bank of America:

What volunteers enjoyed most about MLK Day 2010:
“I got to make a change!”
“Seeing the yellow jackets again and serving my community.”
“Being able to help a school.”
“The interaction with a variety of inspiring people.”
“Making an impact on the students to show that we care.”
“Seeing a large diverse group sharing the values I do.”
“EVERYTHING!”
“Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
