City Year Patch

A Day in the Life

What does a City Year San Antonio corps member do each day?

Glad you asked! CYFK08Tutor2_JenniferCogswell

When you serve with City Year, every day is a chance to make a difference.  No two days will ever be exactly the same, but this schedule provides a sample of what a day in the life of a City Year San Antonio corps member is like.  Also read about our day in the life of a corps member on our blog!

MONDAY - THURSDAY

7:00 am Morning Meeting

  • During our first meeting of the day, called "First Circle," we do a readiness check and give announcements.

7:10 am Morning Greeting

  • After we break, our team heads to the gym where 5th and 6th grade students enter the building. We greet the students and find out how everyone is doing. It's a good time to bond with students and check attendance.

7:30 am Advisory/Morning Mentoring Sessions

  • This is a shortened period when teachers check their class' homework and take attendance. During this time, we conduct mentoring sessions with students, which can include homework help, playing games or talking about how the student is doing.

8:25 am In-class Support

  • The team disperses to go to different classrooms throughout the school, where they help teachers during class time. This means helping struggling students one-on-one or helping a teacher implement a lesson plan.

12:45 pm Lunch Club

  • 6th grade students who are doing well in their classes come during their lunch period to a classroom and play board games with City Year corps members.

1:15 pm Lunch Time (we get a break, too.)

2:15 pm Electives

  • We provide elective classes for 5th grade students that include math and vocabulary/spelling games designed around the curriculm being taught.

4:00 pm Tutoring

  • Students either have a tutoring period, electives or sports. We help tutor 5th and 6th grade students and occasionally help out with sports.

5:00 pm Homework Help

  • The last hour of the day is spent working with students who are falling behind and are assigned to a mandatory homework help session called "No Shortcuts."

6:00 pm Final Circle and Debrief

  • We share high points from the day, areas that could improve and discuss important annoucements.

6:10 pm Head Home

FRIDAY

Like the rest of the week, Fridays are never the same. Friday activities include service preparation and leadership development discussions with external speakers. Topics covered include behavior management, lesson planning, parent engagement and personal development, public speaking, project planning and personal financial management.
